Workshop of the World

stories of industry in & around Philadelphia

Livery Stable, 1892
4523 Springfield Avenue, Philadelphia PA 19143

Preston Thayer and Jed Porter, Workshop of the World (Oliver Evans Press, 1990).

This well-preserved livery stable, dated on a terra-cotta plaque complete with horsehead motif, is an attractive reminder of the importance of transport to West Philadelphia's development. The three segmental arch entryways and interior ramp giving access to the second floor appear to be original.

Update May 2007 (by Harry Kyriakodis):
Still standing and used as an auto repair garage. The building next door, at 4527, is distinctive in its own right, for similar reasons.
